Overview

There are two Model 8835 1 GB Asynchronous
Synchronous SCSI Disk Drives. Model 8835E
and Model 8835U are 5-114 inch Seagate®
Wren® VII disk drives that combine large cap-
acity with fast access and transfer rates. The
disk drive has a capacity of 1.2 GB unformatted, an average seek time of 15 ms (including controller instruction decode times) and a data transfer rate of up to 4 MB/sec burst.

The Model 8835 SCSI disk drive works in conjunction with a SCSI initiator, which is typically an I/O controller on the host. Eight addresses are available on each SCSI bus; the initiator and each SCSI disk drive (target) take up one address.

Both Model 8835E and Model 8835U provide increased data safety since the drive’s heads automatically lock at power down. This makes the Model 8835E an ideal candidate for use with Model 8928 or Model 8931 Removable SCSI Chassis and the Model 8835U an ideal candidate for a Model 8934 4-Device SCSI Chassis or an Encore 91 Series Desk High System.

The Model 8835E Disk Drive packaging includes the basic disk drive housed in an enclosure specially designed with a handle for easy installation and removal, and security applications. The enclosure provides high insertion life connectors rated at 25,000 cycles and a push button address selection switch. The Model 8835U Disk Drive packaging includes the basic disk drive and all the necessary mounting hardware. The drive, for both models, is built with shock-mounted HDA (head disk assembly) and requires no preventative maintenance.

Additional features of the disk drive include:

• Automatic reallocation of media defects

• Advanced flaw management

• Closed-loop, dedicated servo system

• Dedicated head-landing zone

Interface

The embedded SCSI controller conforms to the ANSI SCSI standard and the Common Command Set. The interface supports disconnect/reconnect, self-configuring host software, and automatic features that relieve the host of the need to deal with the physical characteristics of the disk drive.

Low Power Consumption

In idle mode, Models 8835E and 8835U typically draw only 24 watts. The low wattage results in cool operation, higher MTBF, and reduced operating cost. Additional cooling is supplied by the SCSI Chassis.
